The friction stay is a kind of hardware fitting used for openable parts such as doors and windows. The following are the general steps for installing the friction stay:
Prepare tools and materials
- Tools: Electric drill, screwdriver, wrench, measuring tools (such as tape measure, spirit level), etc.
- Materials: Friction stay hinge, screws, washers, etc. Ensure that the specifications and models of the friction stay match those of the doors and windows.
Measurement and marking
- Use the measuring tools to determine the installation positions of the friction stay hinge on the door/window sash and the door/window frame. Generally speaking, the friction stay hinge should be installed on the upper and lower edges of the door/window sash, about 100 – 150 millimeters away from the edges. The specific positions can be adjusted according to the size and weight of the doors and windows.
- Mark the positions of the installation holes on the door/window sash and the door/window frame with a pencil or marking pen, and make sure the marks are accurate.

Install the fixed part of the friction stay
- Place the fixed part (usually the longer end) of the friction stay hinge at the marked position on the door/window frame, and align the edge of the hinge with the edge of the door/window frame.
- Drill holes at the marked installation hole positions with an electric drill. The depth and diameter of the holes should match the specifications of the screws.
- Pass the screws through the fixed part of the friction stay hinge and the holes on the door/window frame, and then tighten the screws with a screwdriver or wrench to ensure that the fixed part of the friction stay hinge is firmly installed on the door/window frame.
Install the movable part of the friction stay
- Place the movable part (usually the shorter end) of the friction stay hinge at the marked position on the door/window sash, and also align the edge of the hinge with the edge of the door/window sash.
- Drill holes at the positions on the door/window sash corresponding to the installation holes of the movable part of the friction stay hinge, and then pass the screws through the movable part of the friction stay hinge and the holes on the door/window sash, and tighten the screws to install the movable part of the friction stay hinge on the door/window sash.
Debugging and inspection
- After the installation is completed, gently lift the door/window sash to connect the movable part of the friction stay hinge with the fixed part, and then slowly open and close the door/window sash to check whether the installation of the friction stay hinge is correct and whether the opening and closing of the door/window sash are smooth.
- Use a spirit level to check whether the door/window sash is horizontal when it is closed. If there is a deviation, it can be calibrated by adjusting the installation position of the friction stay hinge or the tightness of the screws.
- Check whether the gap between the door/window sash and the door/window frame is uniform. If it is not uniform, the friction stay hinge can also be finely adjusted to ensure the sealing performance and aesthetics of the doors and windows.
There may be differences in the installation details of different types and brands of friction stay hinges. Therefore, be sure to read the product instructions carefully before installation and install according to the requirements of the instructions. If you are unsure about the installation process or encounter difficulties, it is recommended to consult a professional door and window installer or a hardware fitting supplier.
